Granvilles Bar and Grill has just re-opened after a serious fire. With a new look and new menu, it’s all bright and shiny, but at heart this is still the family run gem serving great food honestly.
Situated on the main road from Cork to Kerry, at approximately the half way point, lies the town of Macroom, a main stop for those touring around West Cork and heading for Kerry.
Granvilles Bar and Grill is situated at the top of the town, in the shadow of the remaining archway of Macroom Castle, and owners Paul and Leonie Granville have created a charming and unique setting in this small stone building.
A sunny Sunday lunch was on the cards on a recent West Cork adventure. A window seat looked out on the town, and a bottle of sparkling water and some fresh bread got me started. Crab claws are large and juicy and swim in a delicious garlic butter and provide the perfect starter. It seems churlish not to stick with the fish after that and a special of hake with a shallot and leek sauce is perfectly cooked and quite lovely. Duck fat roast potatoes are a greedy side, but I can’t resist and end up eating them all.
So, refreshed and refuelled, we gathered ourselves up and got back on the road, hopeful of a return visit in the near future to try their evening menu which offered lots of other appetising dishes like parmesan & herb tempura Castletownbere scampi, pan seared breast of West Cork Skeaghanore duck or a grilled prime Irish rack of pork chop with DeRoiste black pudding to name but a few. Get down to Granvilles!
It is a lovely welcoming place, full of cheery, buzzing staff all smiling and more than happy to help. As we waited — we were early — we sampled some of the lovely craft beer Paul and Leonie Granville offer. And a glass of Shandon Stout was an excellent reason to arrive early.
Known for its wholesome fare, notably great steaks and seafood, Paul and Leonie Granville’s family-run bar and restaurant is equally popular with local diners and hungry travellers on the main Cork-Kerry road
